Luncheon 2008 Pictures. May 22, 2008 found us back at J.R.'s Stockyards Inn at Tysons Corner for an invigorating and informational program on fitness and nutrition for mature adults. Here, Margaret Ayers chats with Al Bolst. Charlie Leslie welcomes Merlin Smith (left) who was here with his wife Elizabeth from Lafayette, LA. Dave Jones (shown here with Dorothy Magruder and Larry Ayers) was in town , up from Melbourne, FL with his wife Maureen. Great to see regulars Dick Randall and Sam Custer again; Dick and Bill Cordova smile for the camera. Curt Dierdorff and Al Anderson pondering who goes first. Blanche Maxsell, Dick Randall, Margaret Ayers, and Charlie Leslie share reflections. And now Monica Phillips and her team take over. More as we learn different techniques. President John Mendez introduces Dave Burpee, NGA Public Affairs Officer.
On November 20, 2008, we travelled to the Fort Belvoir Officers Club for our Fall Luncheon. Much camaraderie prevailed as we greeted old friends, and made a few new ones. After an excellent lunch served by a very efficient staff, we went on to the program as advertised. With the backdrop of the Potomac River, we listened to very informative and entertaining presentations on the mission (by Lt. Col. Rick Reynolds, Assistant Commandant) and history (by John Batt, Chief, Print/Survey Transition Branch) of NGA's School of Geospatial-Intelligence, as well as an update (by Dave Burpee, Public Affairs Officer, NGA) on construction of NGA Campus-East (click each separately). We welcomed newcomers Steve and Ximena Pedone all the way from Naples, Florida, George Andrus from Louisiana and Dunn Loring, Virginia, and Jay McClatchey from Williamsburg, Virginia. The NGIAA Excellence Award was presented by president John Mendez to Chris Azar from NGA Campus-West. Chris was joined for a photo-op by his wife, Darlene, and his supervisor, Vicki Roach, Director, Analytic Visualization and Operations Research Office.

Ray Kazanjian sends this report on their visit to see Dick Dornbrock, 10-12 June.
"Jocie and I drove to N. Wilkesboro, NC, for a 3-day visit in early June to see Dick Dornbrock who turned 90 last Sept. Dick has his own house in this retirement community, but he suffered a setback in May and was transferred to the nursing home up the hill. He's still quite sharp and likes to joke, but he has lost some strength and needs more assistance. He's frustrated because he would like to return to his home, but the nursing staff insists that he must regain his strength in order to be able to live alone.
The nursing home appears to be well staffed and managed and they treat Dick quite well. He moves around mostly in his wheelchair, but he can walk with his cane when necessary. The first evening we signed him out at the main desk and took him out to a nearby Mexican restaurant. We had a good time, but he was moving more slowly than in previous years when we would go out to dinner several times over a three-day visit. This year he was very tired and the one outing was enough. We have visited Dick each year since he moved to NC about five years ago, and we all look forward to our annual reunion at his home. During this visit, he was not as happy being at the nursing home so we urged him to work at his daily therapy to build his strength so that we can visit him at his home once again next year.
Dick's mailing address remains as in the NGIAA Directory, but he has to wait for someone to pick up his mail at his home once or twice each week, so it takes a few extra days to arrive. He looks forward to hearing from his friends so don't hesitate to write...jokes especially are welcome. He can also be reached by phone at the nursing home however the phone is answered by the staff and they have to bring him to the hallway phone. Dick insists on not getting a personal phone in his room because he says that he plans to return to his home soon. The phone number at the nursing home is: 336-667-2020."
